NIST INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

| Bangkok, Thailand The first full, not-for-profit IB World School in Thailand

Health

Here are a few of the basics–for any additional health-related information, particularly in regards to insurance policy and coverage, please contact Khun Jib (ParichatS@nist.ac.th) in the Human Resources office.

Water

It is safe to use tap water for cooking and making tea or coffee in Bangkok, although not necessarily everywhere in Thailand. It is also easy and cost effective to get drinking water delivered to your home. Some apartment buildings also have 18-liter water bottles in storage that you can get delivered to your apartment or, in central Bangkok, many people use the company ‘Sprinkle’ (Tel: 02 712 7272 – see website for packages and prices: http://www.sprinkle-th.com/en/). You will need to buy a dispenser for the 18-liter bottles if you go with that option – a simple pump will do, but more advanced dispensers have functions that will cool and/or heat the water. Dispensers are widely available at places like HomePro (BTS Ploen Chit), Central Department Store (BTS Chid Lom) and/or Index (BTS National Stadium—this Index is located in MBK shopping center OR Soi Ekkamai).

Vaccinations

Before entering Thailand, a vaccination for Hepatitis B is recommended; in general please follow the medical vaccination and preparation advice issued by your home state. You may get booster shots, if necessary, from recommended hospitals mentioned below, and the school has regular visits from Medi-consult, a company that comes in and can advise you in regards to necessary vaccinations for other travel destinations.

On a final note: In Bangkok risk from malaria is minimal and antimalarial pills are not necessary. However, in some outlying regions of Thailand this is not the case and antimalarial pills may be necessary (please refer to Medi-consult for advice on this).

Hospitals

Bangkok has a number of world-class medical facilities and it is easy to find doctors that have been trained in the US or UK. We encourage you to speak to staff that have been living in Thailand for a while to find a doctor (and/or a dentist, hospital, etc.) that you will be comfortable with. While some prefer to use only the international accredited hospitals, others also recommend small clinics in their neighborhood that are often more convenient and can be just as good.

Bumrungrad and Samitivej are two of the most famous internationally accredited hospitals. Others are Bangkok Hospital or BNH. Dr. Donna, who runs a local clinic, also attends the school every other Thursday after school. Bookings can be made via the school nurse.

Finally, a basic medical check-up will take place at the school during orientation because we need a medical certificate for your work permit (this check-up includes height, weight, blood pressure, etc.).

Dentist

Here are several dentists and dental clinics, recommended by members of staff:
– Dr. Atchara Songsakul, Samitivej – Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02 711 8989
– Dr. Chandigar (excellent English) Bumrungrad www.bumrungrad.com
– 19 Dental Clinic, Sukhumvit Soi 19, 02 253 5379
– Dental Hospital, Sukhumvit Soi 49
– An inexpensive but good dentist near On-Nut BTS. Tel: 02 332 9002 is located on the corner of Sukhumvit Rd Soi 77/1 (about 300m meters from the station; walking back in the direction of Prakanong)

Pharmacies

It often feels like there is a pharmacy on every street. The closest western pharmacy to school is Boots, which is located in the Time Square Building between Soi 12 and Soi 14.One recommended inexpensive Pharmacy is located a little less than 100 meters down Sukhumvit soi 77 on the right hand side. Although not impressive when compared to the ‘Boots’ stores this chemist is wholesale and retail, supplying all the major local hospitals such as Bumrungrad and Samitivej. This is a good place to buy electrolyte sachets, (DeChamp Brand) by the box at the cost of 3 baht each (50 sachets in a box for 150 baht).

Donna

Our clinic is situated next to Samitivej Hosital on Sukhumvit Soi 49/9 in the Racquet Club. We provide general practice consultations, travel vaccinations,  lab tests, medicines, other injections and other common treatments.
AS you know we come to NIST each Thursday on Room 2101 from 2-4 and any appointment can be pre-arranged through Kuhn Tennis, your school nurse.

Best regards

Dr. Donna Robinson
